The Horus Heresy
review 1: This anthology of the Horus Heresy takes place in the wake of the Word Bearers' invasion of the planet Calth (see Dan Abnett's Know No Fear). The surface of Calth is no longer inhabitable, but the Word Bearers and their daemons remain, so the loyal Ultramarines have taken the fight into the underground shelters and arcologies.I cannot remember if I have ever commented on this before, but reading these books is a little depressing. These books are set in Warhammer 40K's history, so whatever happens in these books, it's all for naught. No matter what victories are won, or heroic deeds done, the Emperor will still nearly die, and the Imperium will turn into the monstrosity that it is. Ah, well.
review 2: I've enjoyed the HH anthologies, as they were a way to cover
... more more ground with shorter stories. Mark of Calth, however, does not fit in this category. It is yet another pointless HH instalment with no progression of the main storylines. Did we really need another Ultramarines vs. Word Bearers book, after Know No Fear and Betrayer, not to mention the dreck that was Battle for the Abyss? I guess the BL felt the need to name-drop throughout (having not read Mr. Reynolds 40K Word Bearers Trilogy, why should I care about Marduk's past? I'd read Mr. McNeill's Storm of Iron, and did not care for his fan service in Angel Exterminatus either). Not necessary at all and utterly forgettable.I can totally imagine the BL pumping these out to prolong the HH for another 10 years and 30-40 more books, since they're such good sellers. How many of them will be truly worthwhile and useful? less

Not bad. It was an anthology of shorter stories. I like the full length novels better.
