review 1: Having heard nothing but rave reviews from fans who were pratically ecstatic over this book, I eagerly dove in. Now I know why I am a Space Viking...I mean Space Wolf.(Warning: Some spoilers)Don't get me wrong, I loved this book. It's just that the Thousand Sons Legion are, for lack of a better way to put it, a Legion of magic users. Wizards all in effect. Graham McNeill does a wonderful job, as always, of making a future Daemon Prince (in this case Magnus) out to be a very likeable and extremely sympathetic character. And I will go out on a limb and state that the decision cast on the Council of Nikaea, while the exact same one I would have made (were I the Emperor and knew as much about the Immaterium as he does), was still immesnely unfair to a man and his Legion who we... morere among the more loyal of the Emperor's many children. The Space Wolve's come across as bullies in this book, and to be fair they more than likely are. I am looking forward to Mr. Abnett's take on them in the sequel. The invasion and utter destruction of Prospero, as seen through the eyes of the Thousand Sons, is a tragedy. The Wolves show no mercy to a Legion that did little that is truly wrong and who fight desperately for their people, their world and their honor. But their best efforts are just not enough to stand up to the onslaught of Russ's Vikings of the 31st Millenium. A great book to be sure, one that ranks up there with Fulgrim, The First Hereitc and even Horus Rising as among my six favorites thus far (the other two would be False Gods and Legion). So even though I myself am not a huge fan of magic or magic users (which is why I like science fiction much more than fantasy) this is still a great book by a great author. And yes, it even softened my heart some towards the more 'fantastic' side of the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Also, since reading this book, I've been looking for, and seing damnit, signs, patterns and coincidences in nature and everyday life that, at times, makes think Ahriman and Magnus are looking over my shoulder with a smile on their face.Do yourself a favor, read this book!
review 2: Thoroughly enjoyed this book although it is a behemoth. I had no knowledge of the Thousand Sons legion before reading this apart from brief mentions in previous Horus Heresy books. Its a tragic tale of how they succumb to power of The Great Ocean (The Warp) and the Primordial Annihilator (Chaos). You can't help but empathise with them and their Primarch, Magnus the Red. The pace can be quite slow in places but incredibly detailed and I never got bored with it. Highly recommended. less
