review 1: Even if I hadn't known this was written by Lawrence Block, I would never have mistaken this for a book by a woman. What happened to story arc? This was just a series of scenes with graphic sex and murder after murder. Did Lawrence Block simply have a deadline to meet and this is what came of it? The back story was boring, a typical sterotypical murder's childhood of abuse. It didn't make me feel sympathetic towards the main character, who assumed a different name for every guy she met and all the murders she committed with no one ever suspecting a thing. Apparently no one was looking for her and there was never any mention of the murders she committed making the news. A few chapters turned the tables Kimmy or whatever her name was at the time, but what I really wan... moreted was for someone to kill the main character. She was so annoying and her girlfriend that she called was equally annoying. The ending was a big disappointment. No guesses in this book, just a lot of graphic sex scenes--soft porn and no thrill in this thriller. I'm just sorry I wasted my time.
review 2: I've never read Lawrence Block before, but the cover caught my eye. I'm guessing this cover catches everybody's eye, lol ! It just looked so retro noir...so pulp fiction-y (the genre, not the excellent Tarantino flick...speaking of, I'd LOVE to see what he'd do with this book), that I just had to pick it up. SO glad I did! What fun! Cover to cover sex and violence, dark humor, and a wee bit cathartic, I must admit. I mean, who HASN'T wanted to kill a few men they've slept with, right? ;-) Sorry it ended when it did, but it was a great ending. I think I'm going to have to read a few more from this publishing imprint (Hard Case Crime). Somebody interesting should option this and do something fun with it. less
