review 1: This is a bit of a horror story in terms of the things reasonable people become willing to do if you pull the right levers in the irrational part of the human brain. Before reading I had viewed Scientology with the same bemused consternation as many people; the extent of abuse and violence in L. Ron's history and that of the church took me aback. I would have liked the author to expand a bit more on his ideas about religion as an outlet for idealism and for "the natural human yearning for transcendence and submission".

... moreith it despite the abuses that were taking place. It's still difficult for me, as an outsider, to fully understand why so many put their faith in L. Ron Hubbard's religion. I hope the author will follow up in a few years with updates. less
