review 1: This is a suspenseful, sharply plotted book. I was quite sure it would appeal to teens when I first read it. Then, when I brought it home, I was absolutely sure that it would, because my teenage daughter picked up the ARC and immediately devoured it, not putting it down until she had finished! She then immediately began rereading it the same day. It is a compelling novel. Charlotte's attraction to Kade is all too believable, as is her willingness to be lured into dangerous and unethical behavior because of her loneliness and her attraction to him. The book clearly presents the actions of the league of strays as wrong from the beginning, so I am a bit mystified as to why some readers are perceiving it as homophobic. The overall impact of the book is quite the opposite... more--it opposes anti-gay bullying. Anti-gay characters are presented negatively, whereas Richie, the gay character in the league of strays, is presented as likeable and cruelly persecuted. The novel subtly implies that Richie is being manipulated by Kade just as Charlotte is, that Kade recognizes and plays upon Richie's attraction to him and on Richie's loneliness. The book reveals a sympathetic and astute understanding of the emotional life of teen outsiders. A strong first novel, reminiscent of Sarah D. Littman's Want to Go Private.
review 2: Dark and creepy! Bullies and revenge! Hate and manipulation! League of strays unites a groups of social outcasts under a too-sexy-too-be-true bad boy whose motives are a lot worse than you at first anticipate. I read this while hunting and found myself a little too creeped out as dusk fell in the woods.
