review 1: Again, a story that starts out intriguing,(love that the lead character had a disability) but loses me with the slowness of the story line and eventually Natalie's aloofness. This story had such good potential: historical fiction, great hook at the beginning, idea of a journal retelling the story. However, too bad the story couldn't have picked up more, I think this could have been a good read. However, with too many books to read, I had to put this one down to never finish.
review 2: This was just blah... After reading the description and seeing that the main character was going to be a young mute woman and she becomes enthralled with a painting, I immediately recalled Dorian Gray and was excited for the concept of this book.It was only 240 pages long, and e
... moreven that I felt was too long. The story is told from Natalie's perspective as she records the events in her diary. Her father has no idea what to do with her now that she's completed her education. They hear about a unique painting that seems to enthrall and haunt it's viewers, and go to see it at Madame Northe's house since she is planning to purchase it. Natalie makes immediate friends with Mrs. Northe since Mrs. Northe knows sign language. Mrs. Northe's niece, Maggie, also tries to become friends with Natalie, but Maggie is too full of society and doesn't think but gossips. When Natalie views the portrait of Lord Denbury, mysterious Englishman that supposedly committed suicide, she is struck by his beauty and feels that he is calling to her. Indeed, as she touches the portrait, she is pulled inside it suddenly into the arms of Lord Denbury. Full of talk about the supernatural, life and death and beyond, violence and demons, this book sounds like it should be really good. But it just became so dull. Once Natalie and Lord Denbury met it was all about how much she was becoming attracted to him and how much they loved each other, and was just dull. The few scary moments where she ran into ghosts just ended up her talking about how Lord Denbury, or Johnathon, was her guardian angel banishing the evil spirits. The epic battle that was to occur between her and the demon that had trapped Johnathon in the painting, was over in a few short pages, the rest of the time talking about how she wished it had been Johnathon's hands instead of the demon that carried his visage. The ending is also just super lame. It's left open for Maggie to do something stupid with the supernatural and bring about another demon. The relationship between Johnathon and Natalie is not something that would be approved of, and that her father decides to not press the matter is just annoying. I feel that he is just happy she isn't around since he didn't know what to do with her. Oh, and her ability to speak again ruins all the coolness about her character. Because only someone that could speak could banish the demon... It just fell short and I just didn't like it. Not going to check out the next book. less
