review 1: For some reason, the first time I tried to read this novel, I didn't take to it and rejected it in the midst of the first chapter. It might have been that at the time I had gorged myself on too many young adult paranormals and so when I came upon this one I was not in my right mind. But, having read a short story of Ms. Hieber's and enjoyed it immensely, I decided to return to Percy Parker and was very much rewarded. This novel has everything I love - a strange yet compelling outcast heroine, a fascinating supernatural world, a suspenseful plot, a wonderfully realized romance of the gothic tradition, and simply gorgeous writing. Loved it!
review 2: Fun escapism, but the version from Audible with Rena Durham as the narrator is annoying - Ms. Durham is not pa
... morerticularly literate and mispronounces words such as "Thames" (it takes place in London, so this happens a lot), "donning" (there's a lot of, as she pronounces it, "doaning" of cloaks), "chortles" (pronounced as "court-less"!!!). The problem with this in audio books is that you lose the thread trying to figure out what the heck the reader said, then you back up and listen again.Would not listen to anything which Ms. Durham has narrated again. The second volume of this series, though, had a different narrator and was charming (if slight). less

Captivating. That's right, I used the word "captivating". I loved this book.
