review 1: Disappointing. The idea of tying in Greek myths in Victorian England coupled with Ghostbusting had possibilities. The idea of the Guard and their talents was also interesting. However, the main plotline/main character being a naive/ditzy girl who has a crush on her professor (nearly twice her age) was just creepy. "Oh he's the practically the only man I've ever met (having grown up in a convent) and he's one of the few people that doesn't think I'm creepy... this must be love." ICK.
review 2: There were aspects of the book I liked-- The obvious fanfic of Severus Snape, for one. Who doesn't love Snape? The secret society fighting evil... hmmm, sounds familiar but happily so. So what killed it? It was like Percy was based on an even more simpering, unlikable Be
... morella Swan. The self-deprication and despairing of her own looks just got so on my nerves it pretty well killed it for me. You know that feeling you get when You are sitting on a damp towel? That was what it felt like to read about Percy. I'm sad about it because I wanted to like this unique young woman. less

Jane Eyre at Hogwarts. Kept my interest despite a disappointingly flat supporting cast.

I would have been less annoyed by this book if it had been about 5 pages shorter...
