review 1: Nice prose combined with an utterly believable voice. The adult characters are not fleshed out well enough, particularly the father, but the teenage girl growing up in an Orthodox Jewish home who finds herself in love with a non-Jewish girl, the protagonist of the book, is wonderful. In the course of this book, the author can only gesture at other ways of being authentically Jewish that would include and celebrate young Ellie, but at least she lets readers know they are there. I wonder if in anyone's coming out story, this book plays a major role?
review 2: The premise intrigued me: Orthodox Jewish teen girl wrestles and/or reconciles her newfound lesbian side. Unfortunately, I had to slog through the first half of the book, but was determined to finish it. I
... morejust had to know how it ended. The descriptive passages in the first half are abundant but...forced somehow, not poetic. The second half of the book is somewhat juicy and definitely pulled me along. Did the writing get better? Perhaps. The ending surprised me: itwas pretty good. less
