review 1: The concept sounded fascinating, so I ordered it from the library. The presentation of the story through a catalog of photos requires a hard copy as opposed to reading it on one of my phone apps. Unfortunately, the novelty of the idea wore off about halfway through. The story just wasn't interesting enough. The story of a couple meeting, having a relationship, and breaking up was just so ordinary, and viewing it through this different perspective wasn't enough to make it compelling. To me it was just depressing. Let's face it, most relationships end, in different ways and sometimes dramatically. You have to delve deeply into the people's personalities, thoughts, feelings, their inner lives, in order to make their relationship story meaningful and interesting to a reader, t... moreo make the reader care, and I just didn't. This book just skims the surface, the depressingly familiar surface of failed relationships. Maybe the author's point is that when you catalog what's left of your failed relationship it looks just like every other one you've ever had or anyone has ever had, and it's supposed to make us all feel together in our loneliness or something....but it didn't work for me. Props for the attempt, though.
review 2: A love story told in pictures, as an auction catalog. Leanne Shapton shows the evolution and the downfall of a relationship through the pictures of the objects and memorabilia that two people have exchanged, used or given each other in the course of four years: the ticket stubs, the books, love notes and messages scribbled on scraps of paper, stuff they bought to furnish their apartment together. Totally brilliant. Sheila Heti, author of How Should a Person Be? stars as the female love interest in photos of the couples. less

Really interesting and surprisingly affecting way to tell the story of a relationship.

I love the layout of the story as an auction pamphlet. Really makes the reader think.
