review 1: Lee's writing style was engaging and the stories he told were particularly interesting. He was able to tell honest stories about his successes without coming across as arrogant. That in itself is a huge accomplishment. The leadership strategies are indeed common sense as the cover will tell you. I've found that with many of these self improvement books the principles are very basic. It is the application that is the challenging part.If I have a criticism of the book it would be that it does not apply to to leadership in every role. A lot of the key points in the book are most applicable if you are already a high level manager. For example, Lee states the value of interacting with lower level employees. He tells stories about how a small interactions provide motivatio... moren for a long time. That only works if you are already an executive and everyone knows that your time is limited. Lee also spends a lot of time talking about training and hiring. While important, those chapters are particularly relevant only if you have direct reports. My second criticism is that the book works best in an operational settings. Since Lee worked in operations, his experience lies in that arena. It makes sense that his stories and his principles are derived from those settings. For example, Lee talks about the value of the front line employees. I struggled to apply that to the office setting. True we have internal customers, but no one I work with sees external customers. I tried to apply some principles but it felt like a stretch. All in all I enjoyed the book. I think that if I was a mid to upper level operational executive than I would have loved it. Even still, Lee's stories and his writing style were engaging, motivational and educational.
review 2: This is a phenomenal take on teaching leadership strategies. Cockerell did an amazing job making something potentially sleep-inducing and instead turning it into a page-turner. I really enjoyed the personal experiences that he shared; they really emphasized his points, and they were examples I've seen firsthand at Disney parks! I definitely recommend this one to anybody- management or not! Cockerell's tips can apply to any job, but I think they're valuable tips for general success as well. less
