Mr. Monk
review 1: I take it back. Reading this series, I've so far said that I prefer the stories set on home ground, and felt the others were forced. This one is the exception to the rule. Monk and Natalie go to Summit, New Jersey to help Randy and Sharona and although it is still within the US, in some ways it takes Monk further out of his comfort zone than any of the European adventures. Yet it works.I found myself laughing aloud again in this one.A good fun read.
review 2: I agree with other reviewers that I'm not thrilled about how this book broke from the formula. I know that Goldberg has done many uncharacteristic things with Monk because he's able to use the limitlessness of a book that the medium of TV could not provide. He's also been able to flex those creative muscles
... more under the explanation that Trudy's murder has been put to rest and Monk is gradually improving. However, I don't like the trajectory of the multiple mysteries in the book. I know that Goldman usually starts off with a quick solve to show the reader and any skeptical characters just how good a detective Monk is. Then, they move on to the main mystery of the novel. For this current book, however, the main mystery is actually split into two and both are solved at staggered points throughout the novel. This made for the plot to seem a bit disjointed. I also did not like the cliffhanger aspect of the ending. Even though the mysteries were solved, I'm afraid of what's to come because I don't want the Monk universe to be shifted too much. The books can be as creative and uncharacteristic as they want, so long as they are bookended by Monk's state of normalcy. Since this books ends without his return to Monk normalcy (and the possibility that he may never return to it), I'm a bit disappointed with how it turned out and worried about the solution to Monk's dilemma. less

I love my Monk books. This was a good one. Randy and Sharona added to the storyline. Very good.

Monk and Natalie go to New Jersey to help out Disher and Sharona, and solve a few mysteries.
