Mr. Monk
review 1: This was another good book to read.Monk's world seems shattered as he learns his brother, Ambrose, has allowed a woman to move in with him.Natalie tries her had at solving the mystery of an unknown man found dead in an apartment.Though he died of natural causes she wants to know what brought him there to die in a run-downapartment holding an old photograph of a child & woman. And there are murders going on, too.
review 2: Adrian Monk and his assistant Natalie Teeger are likable characters, and because Lee Goldberg has written for Monk's eponymous TV series, he knows them well. Goldberg's experience bequeaths to us an affectionate thriller. I liked the book a lot. The only drawback to "Mr. Monk on the Couch" is that I had figured out who one of the two killers wa
... mores by the time Mr. Monk got around to divulging that killer's identity to Natalie. Natalie is the person telling this story, so it's safe to say that Lee Goldberg worked harder at staying true to the characters than at generating suspense for the main plot line. That minor failing aside, what puts this mystery a cut above many others is its knowledgeable handling of obsessive-compulsive disorders and its wry humor. Ruminating about the history of the Ferry Building in San Francisco, for example, Natalie wonders what would happen if it were attacked by a giant octopus, and is self-aware enough to note in passing that all movie monsters seem to be fond of architectural landmarks.Without laying the pop culture on too thick, Goldberg also bows gracefully to influences that many readers will applaud him for having acknowledged. For example, Monk's genius for detective work is well-known, but his assistant is trying her hand at the same game here and can't be expected to spot incongruities as quickly as her employer, so at one point she writes everything she knows about a case on index cards, telling us that she learned that trick "from Kinsey Milhone." Well played, Mr. Goldberg! Surprisingly, the book also has thoughtful things to say about friendship, self-doubt, and closure. less
