The Best Creative Nonfiction
review 1: I’m a little biased because my essay, “Chicago Transit Priority,” is in this book, but I did really enjoy it. Gutkind might be presumptuous claiming the title of “Godfather of Creative Nonfiction,” but it’s still an honor to be chosen alongside so many other excellent writers. My favorites were “First Year” by Laura Bramon Good, “The Face of Seung-Hui Cho” by Wesley Yang, and “Lavish Dwarf Entertainment” by Alice Dreger. I read it straight through, but I think it might be best sampled one piece at a time, here and there, to fill in the gaps between longer books.
review 2: This seems to be a general collection of yearly nonfiction as opposed to the Atwan Best American Essays series, which is often dominated by metawriting and geared towar
... mored essayists' essays. Also, I'm not sure what the blog pieces add except that good nonfiction is being written in the blogosphere (um, yes, we know). The range of topic and form is an ample introduction to those who still wonder "what is cnf?"--which is why the blurb must begin with that specific question. A good introduction for those unfamiliar with, or wanting to know more about, creative nonfiction. less

I might be a little biased with my review (hah) but this really is a great collection.

Wesley Yang's "The Face of Seung-Hui Cho" is pretty amazing.
