review 1: "Explanation" sounds so natural for most people. You explain how to go to a bus station to a lost stranger. You explain why your boss just made a mistake. You explain why local coffee places are better than starbucks. You explain so many times on a single day that it just feels natural. If you thought this way, you are not alone. That was exactly how I considered what explanation is.If you go a little deeper, you can see that explanation is a process to transform vague images of your brain to your audiences' brain. You may think information was delivered without loss. The truth is, it isn't that easy. Maybe, your audiences do not understand jargons you just used. Maybe, your explanation is missing details that audiences have no idea about. Maybe, audiences don't think what... more you are explaining is important enough and just ignore. As an expert of "explanation", the author shows what it is really like. The book shows explanation is a skill that you can master by practicing.I think it is worth it to get better at explaining. As the world is getting more complicated, it will get harder to understand each other. So, wrapping things with a good explanation can be a critical skill. Of course, understanding the theory is a different story from actually executing. But I'm glad that I could see explanation as a skill through this book.
review 2: One of the things that interested me about this book was the concept that explaining is a skill. Like any skill, your ability to help people understand the world around them can be improved. This book does several things well in its three main parts, planning, packaging, and presenting explanations. Coming from the data analysis / business intelligence field, it's easy to become enamored with an analysis, but until other people understand what you understand, you haven't finished your analysis. Long story short, great book for improving your ability to increase understanding. less

This is a 5 star book if you come from a background where you seldom have had to explain anything.
