review 1: Though friends of mine loved the portrayal of craziness, I felt that the narrative was badly handled. The narrator, a woman who lives most of her life in a mental facility, comes off as too sane for most of the book for the sudden collapse of the narrative into fragments later in the book to make a lot of sense. I've read many other novels in which an unreliable narrator was much better handled.
review 2: I loved this novel! I heard Lee Smith read from it last fall at the Southern Festival of Books. She commented that she is fascinated with Zelda Fitzgerald. I believe I am, too. Also, how the mentally ill were treated in the 1930s and 1940s is intriguing. At least at Highland Hospital, they were treated respectfully and as human beings. I applaud Lee S
