review 1: I love Lee Smith's novels, and have been lucky enough to hear her speak a few times. I guess I should say that I'm not much of a fan of short stories. Most of them leave me thinking, "and then what?" Also, although I have lived in the south for over 30 years, I will never be "a southerner." So maybe that's why most of these stories didn't move me very much. Too many references to cheerleading and debutantes (I'm very happy to be neither). There is a sly humor to most of her stories, and two that I liked the best were Toastmaster, where a young boy out to dinner with his mother and her friend becomes acquainted with a group of Toastmasters; and House Tour where a woman's home is mistakenly visited by a group of older women at Christmas time.

... more stories are quickly becoming a delicious side dish for me. this is the third or fourth collection I have read and my first with Lee Smith. she speaks from the heart of every woman and certainly adds a touch of southern spice. you can't help but be pulled by their stories. in the end they are empowered and exactly where they want to be. heartwarming, meaningful and if they don't make you pause and asses your own feelings and your own life then you are not alive! less

Although there are some lovely stories here, few are particularly memorable for me.
