review 1: Decent story, but one that is difficult to read given the context of the story. The story is one that's difficult to follow at times though, as it lacks transition panels phrases at key junctures. For example we see one of the girls with the Doctor talking about reading and then very next panel goes to her mom's shop. And there are other places like this in the book. Artwork though is distracting as there isn't a consistent style. It wavers from semi-realistic to overly cartoony. It reminds me of something that wants to be like Persepolis, but it doesn't get close to that.
review 2: This is an ambitious work, at least it starts as such. In its sweep, it remind me of the many immigrant and first-generation novels that make up much of Jewish American literature i
... moren the first half of the twentieth century. But there are a couple of aspects about this work that have me wondering. The first is the ending, which seems at the same time both truncated and a bit sentimental. (The flashback with the young sisters at the very end may be an attempt to quickly shift the tone.) The other part of the book I find curious is the middle section which tells the father's tale and how he came to America. It's a strong section, but it seems out of place in the book as a whole. I'm not entirely sure what the father's story brings at the place where it actually occurs. I can speculate as to a reason, but the way it's just inserted where it is, it disrupts the main narrative. less
