review 1: I picked up this book on a whim (I think it was a freebie at the time) and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. I like historical fiction and this was set during a period and in a place I hadn't read much about before. Hale was a great narrator and I enjoyed seeing how she dealt with her day to day life. Her relationship with Beau seemed a little rushed, but as it progressed, I really saw their connection. Roland was another great character and I wish I had learned a little more about him. I will definitely pick up the next book when it is out to find out what happens with Freddie (another interesting character I would like to know more about). The story has some dark elements, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger readers.
review 2: Rouge wa
... mores an intensely brutal read. Hale's life was a terribly tragic story. After the loss of her Mother her life was predestined to remain intertwined with this erotic and dangerous lifestyle. I was caught up in the web of secrets and lies of this story. Far older than her years, she has a premeditated plan that will allow her to overcome this life of poverty, and open a whole new life for her and Teeny. I was mystified to follow this truly righteous young woman as she puts her plan into action. Not above lying she knows that the only hope in this dark and draining world is to find a way out. Little did she expect Beau, and little did is know that she would fall head over heels in love with him. I am very awkward about this story. It was a very intriguing story, and the style captured my attention. It is easy to say that this was a good story, but it is terribly unjust story as well and readers will spend the duration sympathizing with these characters. With such an incredibly bleak story readers will enjoy the adventure, and resilient determination of this young girl through her trials. I am glad to have had the chance to experience this journey, and will remember it long after its conclusion. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer JO~ less
