review 1: This novel was written by a Muslim woman and tells the tale of the ups and downs in a wealthy family in the early 1950s when Sudan was gaining its independence from Britain. What I enjoyed the most was the exposure to a life, a time, a place, and a culture that I didn't know that much about. It isn't perfect, and there aren't that many passages where the writing soars, but still, it's definitely worth reading. There's a lot in it to appreciate.
review 2: This book never quite gels. Everything about it is ok, fine, nice, but far from mind-blowing. It was interesting to read about Sudan and Egypt in the 50s, and gain a picture of events from different points of view. But somehow, it remains on the sidelines, or perhaps it tries to say too much. The style is awkwa... morerd in places. Ultimately, I found it disappointing: I was hoping for a colourful, powerful novel and it just didn't live up to my expectations. less
