review 1: This book was a fast and easy read but not one that stands out. There was too much in this book that just fell into place too easily and some things were just not explained well. We don't know why Elise is bullied and picked on. She doesn't seem that uncool to me. Elise is quite down on her life at one point and the next time we see her time has passed and she seems to be coping OK. I just didn't think that was realistic. I also didn't think that what happened to Elise at the underground dance club was realistic either. Perhaps I was looking at this book in a too analytic way and perhaps I'm not young enough to really appreciate this book.
review 2: 2.5 starsOk so when i originally saw this book i thought hmmm another spin on teenage coming of age? is it
... more really worth it? apparently i thought it was. The cover took me in so i decided to read it. Don't make that mistake.Bad things:Only the a million times played over story where the lost girl finds herself and love, which i usually really like, but this book just did it all wrong. It was obvious char was a douche from the start, i mean he didn't even notice her scars! but then why did she continue to go home with him? don't tell me becase she didn't feel worthy of anyone else. That's bullcrap. And about the 'going home' part, if she'd never kissed anyone before how was it that she was totally ready to go have sex with some (virtual) stranger? Somehow, i don't know how, she managed to find herself through all that, but even then it wasn't that well written, there'd just be random parts where she'd have this realization about it all immediately thereafter she'd go back to hating herself. seriously. This brings me to elise herself who was initially so irritating because life isn't just somthing you can alter over the course of a summer and theres obviously so many other things you can jump to after besides killing yourself. That's life and its your fault so gt ovr it. She got better as the book went but was still having fits of self doubt/hatred, which is normal for teenagers obviously but it just wasn't written well. it was offputting. I mean poor little alex!! who does that? The whole idea of finding this magical nightclub was far-fetched already but putting it in the newspaper? its meant to be secret for gods sake!Good things:The charcters were actually really well written with great personalities that flowed into the story, especially vicky. It was great to see the others be a part of it without having their own plotline that stole any attention. Alex and neil were cute and likeable, sally and chava at times irritating but ultimately 'cool' and loyal and just friends. Pippa, just... hard to get, and nothing actually happened on her alcoholism which was dissapointing. Char, what can i say? well written to be the rocking mysterious guy, a bit of a tool really. Vicky: amazing in all aspects, a great backstory and future with wagons of talent :) harry, amazing drumer, all round good guy. The parents well fleshed out and ultimately just protective and proud. The music: was fantastic, the way it was written about was great, not too complex and really interesting. I sorta wanna be a Dj now.Overall i wouldn't recommend it to exerienced readers, its just too simplistic with a lot o missing elements. I don't know, maybe i'm just ick of ya, Either way it had some good elements but i wouldn't read it again. Thanks for enduring this long winded review ;) less
