review 1: Katie warned me and I didn't listen, but it had such promise. Granted this is YA and is not expected to have the Feminist Sci Fi meat that Gate to Women's Country by Sheri Tepper or Walk to the End of the World by Suzie McKee Charnas has (excellent man-hating Sci Fi, btw) but this really fizzles. Keller is a young girl being trained to be a tracker, to protect her world from the enemy - men. The young girls in her group are not allowed to touch or care for one another. Their world is work, sleep and not enough food. They are not allowed to show emotion or any kind of individuality. The small group of girls that she trains with discover a buried home filled with treasures from days long gone. They do not report this find, but begin to visit clandestinely. It changes them ... more- they wear the clothes and the old makeup. Maybe that's what I dislike? I want them to care about more than winning their little beauty contest? They are found out, of course, and bad things happen. Keller begins to realize that things are not what they seem and that plans are being made for her. The enemy turns out to be the crazy female leader NOT the supply trading mutant men, ugh (now wouldn't that have been more fun?). The ending is such a let down. She gets away, leading to part two, I suppose but I won't be wasting time or money on this sequel. Very disappointing.
review 2: It was good. The beginning was very interesting, but when it sort of fell apart for the girls, it sort of fell apart in the plot. Why did Keller kill Laing? Couldn't she at least try to save her? And at the end, all it was was that Keller had to leave the island and understanding the world around her. There was no final confrontation with the head psycho, or any final fight, just her leaving. There had better be a squeal to this book, because so far the ending is clearly lacking. less

I enjoyed this. It reminded me a lot of The Handmaid's Tale. Pretty quick listen.
