review 1: At first, I have to say that this book annoyed me. I read it quickly and couldn't wait to get through it, but knew that there was something deeper to the story. I read it again, more slowly and much more analytical. This story is a great lesson to kids to be who they want to be and for those others not to judge. I think it needs to be used in partnership with discussions with children and not just left to free read. For some reason, even today, the illustrations in this book really irritated me. Something I still can't figure out rereading the book.
review 2: I chose to include this book in my text set because it provides a clear example of the difference between tolerating someone’s unique forms of self-expression and respecting them. Woolbur’s parents are
... moreinitially concerned about his unconventional behavior and they try to force him to conform to the societal norms of their community. Woolbur eventually teaches them not to be afraid of his uniqueness and they realize how important it truly is. less
