Goodreads Summary

Love is a risk worth taking.

Years ago, Kahlen was rescued from drowning by the Ocean. To repay her debt, she has served as a Siren ever since, using her voice to lure countless strangers to their deaths. Though a single word from Kahlen can kill, she can’t resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again.

Kahlen is resigned to finishing her sentence in solitude…until she meets Akinli. Handsome, caring, and kind, Akinli is everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. And though she can’t talk to him, they soon forge a connection neither of them can deny…and Kahlen doesn’t want to.

Falling in love with a human breaks all the Ocean’s rules, and if the Ocean discovers Kahlen’s feelings, she’ll be forced to leave Akinli for good. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart.

My Thoughts

I have to say, I was deeply disappointed reading this. The plot is weak, but it stretches on with tons of useless chapters. Basically all the novel consists of Kahlen talking to herself in her mind. I wanted more about other characters and not just all about her. I was pretty excited for this book and for Kahlen, and I was just hoping for so much more. Like more about what Akinli was doing or Kahlen’s past. There could have been so much more added to the story. I think I would have gotten so much more attached to the characters and to the plot. What didn’t make sense is that Akinli drops college and doesn’t even go back  and he doesn’t ask Kahlen the right questions when she just suddenly appears out of the blue after months of nothing! I was also disappointed that there was no more insight into Kahlen’s life before becoming a Siren and we also learned next to nothing about any of the rest of the Sirens. I liked that all of the girls were from different times and had such different lives before becoming Sirens. There was so much potential for an interesting story, but nope it just didn’t live up to it. It was definitely unrealistic that Akinli’s family just took Kahlen in with open arms. Who in their right mind would bring in a mysterious girl that washed ashore that can’t talk and won’t even try to explain what’s happened to her and why she’s there in the first place? It wasn’t absolutely terrible but I just love the execution of it.
