review 1: I'm a seriously religious Christian who read this Book. I always enjoy a humorous approach to religion. And I get a kick out of Lewis Black generally. In the end I have to say Lewis did a somewhat fair job. He's no religious scholar or Biblical theologian (and He clearly shares that with us) but what he IS is a guy who has a few questions/concerns/mockings of things that don't seem to agree with him. Fair enough. So do I.His chapter on Michael "The Psychic" was amusing. Although Lewis Black is a JEW: so someone telling him he's about to be successful in show business is a GIVEN - not much risk there. And success or failure in love is pretty generic. But as a Christian I just assume demons are doing their job adequately. That must explain why psychics seem to live in the poo... morer end of town (and with all those prophetic POWERS?!)A great quote:"Nobody grows nut jobs with the same panache as the good old U.S. of A." Can't argue with that kind of logic - Lewis calls it like he see's it. Especially when chatting about UFO cults and psychopathic megalomaniacs. I wouldn't call this a gift of discernment, but it's definitely stating the obvious for those that are clueless.Another great quote about Mormonism:"All religions require a leap of faith - I'm not saying that Moses' burning bush is any easier to believe than the gold plates - but this one seems to need a rocket pack to make the leap."I think just about everyone will enjoy Lewis Black's commentary of Islam. He even creatively gives us "The Suicide Bomber's Prayer": It's hilarious!"Finally, and this is really important, I pray that brother Blow Shid Ap knows what he is doing with the explosives. Please guide his every move--or those virgins will be worthless to me"A fun romp, but not anything useful in a journey of religious truth. The Bible still is God's Word: whether Lewis comprehends it or not. My guess is Lewis has gone as far as he can in spiritual matters. But there's still hope. But some religion without comedy is a dangerous thing. We need people like Lewis Black here on Earth.
review 2: Lewis Black is one of those comics that use humor to entertain, but also educate. His stand-up is renown for its harsh, direct, but on-point delivery, his twitching and explosive outbursts are part and parcel of his act. Being Jewish, he often points out his atheism and the ridiculousness of religious belief, at least on stage. The book is, at least it seems, a bit different. The book's theme is obvious but often the theme seems lost in the content. The stories include his experiences with several "mystics" that he seems to give credit to for their "talents"; he has faith that their "abilities" are real. However, he is quick to point out the organized religions that he mentions are (insert famous Lewis Black outbursts here). His softening on mysticism may be a part of the cynicism that that we all know and love, but if this is the case, it is lost in the written word. The book does not capture his onstage antics and only captures part of his stand-up prowess. While I consider Lewis Black one of the preeminent comics of the last twenty years (on par with George Carlin), I think that his talents for pointing out injustices through comedy depends too much upon his live show to be captured in print. It is an easy, quick read, but for Lewis Black fans it may come up short. less

I like Lewis Black. I love his style of humor and his delivery. I've read Nothing's Sacred which was OK. I've also seen him perform in New York on the Let Them Eat Cake tour a few years ago and had a blast. He is a sharp and intelligent comedian. But THIS book, boy. What a flop. I can't believe that Black, with his talent, mileage and wit, came up with this bore. Too few funny ideas and moments and too many fillers just can't make up a book. Maybe he was obligated by the publishers to write this book as a part of his contract. I heard he also wrote a book about Christmas, but I don't intend to read it. He should stick to his act and TV specials.Lewis, your comedy works better on the stage and the screen, not in the print form!

While a pretty decent book, I'd hardly call it a comedy. Only a few times did I actually laugh out loud. On the other hand, Lewis succeeds in providing monologues and the occasional poignant moment (such as the religious experience he had while golfing). I greatly enjoyed reading the insights provided by Lewis, but would have preferred a quicker beginning (the first chapters were a tad slow - with Lewis easing into the religious talk by starting with a dry bit on airplane terminals).Note: Audio Version
