review 1: The premise is great, the characters interesting, the story keeps you going but .. although I went into this knowing it was humourous, sometimes I found it a bit too light. After reading the 1st book in the series I couldn't wait to get into the 2nd. Ansgar is just so serious and determined to stay away from the madness that affected Brand, you know he's going to fail but it's fun reading about his interactions with Evie. & I loved how Evie came out of her shell. Meredith is one of the most annoying characters and even though she is an important part of the story I could have done without her. I don't like writing reviews that include facts on the story in case I accidently give something away which makes it difficult but if you enjoy a story that has a fairly serious stor... morey line that is tempered with humour, this is a great series.
review 2: Setting: Hannah, lumber mill office; flower shop; Behr County Jail; trailer in Froggy Bottom; nature spot at Dell River with waterfall, and ledges; River Oaks Cemetary;Theme: overwhelming love; mourning a love not remembered (memory erased); what is going on in Hannah?Characters:Sarah Evangeline (name Ansgar uses) ‘Evie’ Douglass: curvy; teased growing up as being fat by some of the mean spirited girls (later women) of town; after coming out of her shell in last book under Ansgar’s tutelage, but having memory wiped, she has spent last 3 months in mourning without knowing why, lost appetite, sad, no energy, migraines randomly hit – back to frumpy clothes;Ansgar Dalvahni: left Evie because he was not going to become weak like Brand, but after a month, and no surcease in a thrall, he returns … but remains invisible for a couple of months, simply watching over Evie, mooning over Evie, not sure how to reestablish a connection with her since she doesn’t remember him; when she finds Meredith’s body, he transports her to safety… and returns into her life;Meredith Starr Peterson aka Death Starr: stabbed to death after accusing Evie of sleeping with her husband; bitchy; Trey asked for divorce; she was distraught; after dies, returns as ghost, to be seen by a few (Evie, Addy, the Dahlvanhnis, and her poor husband); afterdeath counseling not making much ground;Trey Peterson: Evie’s boss; interested in Evie, though married; heir to a fortune; afraid of grandfather;Blake Peterson: demonoid; Trey’s grandfather; killed his son (Trey’s father) in front of Trey because felt son was too wimpy, as he preferred piano – threw him against wall and timber saw; keeps his father alive Clarice Peterson: Blake’s wife; vacant look most of the time; beaten by husband; sits in drawing room and listens to dead son (ghost) playing piano; is the one who actually killed Meredith – to set up husband, but Blake tried to frame Evie;William ‘Cole’ Coleman Peterson: Blake’s father killed a Dalhvanhi in his prime, and wrested and kept a demon inside him – though he is wasting away;Sildhjort: of unknown origin; danced with Evie, and gave her back her memory – pushing the resolution to the accusations - Drakthal, morkyn: wants knife (owned by Petersons) that can kill a Dahlvanhi… Addy / Brand Dalvanhni: transformed Dalvahni & flower shop owner/darkly handsome, intimidating, demon slayer fiancé; they’re planning a wedding – and helping Ansgar and Evie;Carl E Davis, Chief of Police / Bitsy: watching things unfold / Addy’s interfering mother;Sheriff Whitsun: demonoid; in charge of solving Meredith’s murder; on the side of good… hmmmNicole Eubanks (Nikky) aka Mullet Woman: crazy woman; trying to save her dog from a dog stalker; crazy hair, crazy clothes, crazy talk… but Evie takes her under her wing, and gets her a job with Addy;Conall – leader of the Dalvanhni; comes to town to check things out… can’t believe demonoids can be good, but fascinated by BeckEdmuntina ‘Muddy’ Fairfax: Addy’s great-aunt; ‘sees’ things’Hibiscus Corwin: ex-town drunk (drank for 30 years because could see demons no one else could see), once knows there are demons, he stops drinking, and he returns to lawyering and defending EvieLenora Thralvani/ : Thrall/town mortician – budding painter (mostly of a nude Lenora):Beck – owns bar that caters to the demonoids; is a demonoid; fights for right; knows how to suck soul of demon into a glass (and deposits it in the glass bar); her and Conall?Summary:All work together to figure out who killed Meredith and why… with lots of strange things along the way… ultimately Trey confesses – to protect both Evie and his grandfather… but when the rest figure out it isn’t him… they go to his house… discover the great grandfather, and that Clarice killed Meredith… and then she blows up the house, and kills her husband and his father…hmmmAnd Trey, a bit at odds, is approached by the morkyn about a certain knife… hmmmEvie and Ansgar & Addy and Brand – double wedding – pulled together by BitsyMemorable scenes:Each time Ansgar is with her, he smells her and she smells differently –“sweet scent – honeysuckle and goat’s milk”Ansgar tells Evie: Evie is the name of a frightened, lonely girl… Evangeline is a beautiful, strong women – You are Evangeline.”Ansgar – the Nordic god of SplendorSample of how the Dahlvanhi’s speak: Loving a thrall could not be an easy thing, even without the man’s former spousal unit and his interfering, demanding matriarchal unit (example of Dahvanhi speak)Muddy and Mr. Collier eloped to Disneyworld / Shep and Leonora and his 3 kids did the sameAfter recovering her memory, angry with Ansgar, she goes bar hopping with Leonora, she can’t get drunk, until Beck’s bar, and chocolate liqueur and chocolate bugles; less
