review 1: What a fantastic book. Classic swords-and-sorcery fantasy, somehow completely original. A sweeping story, a grand cast of characters - real, rounded characters with flaws and graces and feelings like any human being. Even the evil-doer garners sympathy, the murderer compassion.Well-written, compelling, beautiful in places, terrifying in others. An excellent read for any fan of adventure in far-away lands.
review 2: This is a very standard swords and sorcery type fantasy. It also felt like it had too much of the too-familiar-lately manner of "here's a whole bunch of names and places and geography that I need you to memorize in the first 30 pages so you will understand what's going on". Which I hate. If you're going to world-build, then friggin' world-build, but ... moredon't half-ass it through cheap exposition. This book is pretty short, and the typeface is such that it honestly felt like a young adult novel, which it may be; I didn't really check it out beforehand. It's got more mature themes than a YA novel, though, so who knows. less
