review 1: This was a case of I really wanted to like this book more, because there's so much about the plot that I really enjoyed. But I didn't enjoy the characters, in ways I can't entirely put my finger on.And it included a few of my pet peeves about things:1. the protagonist is vaguely dismissive towards her mother's nerdiness even though the protagonist is nerdy in a different way, as if being into mystery novels is better than being into sci fi/fantasy. (there is nothing outright said, but it felt implied to me) (also, I've only played one game of D&D, but I have friends who play a lot, and there's a thing that happens that I don't think is actually how D&D goes)2. There's a case of the protagonist being unaware of her actions until she's actually done them. This is like the no... moret-aware-she-said-it-out-loud thing for me. I don't mind characters doing things impulsively before they stop themselves, but not being aware of it until it's done? No.3. Love interest kisses the protagonist to shut her up.4. kissing someone solves all the relationship problems. No, you need to communicate.
review 2: I feel in love with the cover and blurb of this book - having loved Nancy Drew stories as a kid, how I could resist a YA Girl Detective?I won't repeat the plot, just sum up it's strengths and weaknesses.Bee and Toby are great characters and different enough to stand out from many other books, which is great. The Natural History Museum setting is superb. I did a library work experience stint once in the entomology department of the Liverpool World Museum and remember thinking at the time that it would be a wonderful setting for a novel! The supporting cast are great, including her mum and the Celestial Badger. The 'villains' however are a little one dimensional, which was disappointing. The nerd in me loved the Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars and Doctor Who references and the lit buff appreciated the nods to Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. The overall story was a little underwhelming and I felt that a few chapters rambled without much happening. Having said that, I sped-read the last few chapters to find out who did it!Overall, a decent book and I would definitely read more books by Lili Wilkinson. less

Short, fun, well-paced detective novel. I just have one question. What's a vanilla slice?
