review 1: For being a short book, Night Shift got off to a slow start. Slow to the point that I was getting bored and kept setting it aside. However, things finally picked up halfway through and I was able to power through. Things I loved: The action. Very descriptive fights, and when Jill goes badass, she goes badass. The weres, especially Saul Dustcircle. Talk about keeping cool under pressure and levelheaded. I hope he plays a bigger role in the next book.Things that needed some work: The dialogue, mainly from Jill. It was painful to read at many points. At least with Dante Valentine, her sarcasm was humorous. Jill's? Not so much. Plus, her constantly waxing poetic about the scar was a bit annoying, but I guess that will continue throughout the series, so I'll have to... more get used to it. All in all, it was an okay read. Enough that I'm willing to read the second book, Hunter's Prayer.
review 2: ***********Mild Spoilers Ahead****************Night shift was a decent read. It just falls into the common tropes of the genre. I liked the Dante Valentine series more than I liked this one because at least, the mythology behind it was somewhat new what with demons and all. Here though, there is really nothing new under the sun. The heroine is a lonesome hunter who suffers from loss and grief. To make matters worse, she had a mentor with whom she consorted. If there is something I cannot stand it is that kind of relationship. Kismet was a prostitute, granted a dying one, when she met her mentor Mikhail Tostoil (…) who would then become her lover and save her from a lifetime of johns and quickies behind closed doors. For me their relationship was nothing short of abusive. She was vulnerable when he “saved” her. As a result, she latched onto him. He should have known better than to bed her. It’s not healthy. So I’m sorry, I was not emotionally invested in their relationship. I understand that she felt grateful toward him but to go to such lengths as to show such devotion to a man that beat her bloody (to train her) and then proceeded to have sex with her …Besides, their relationship was glossed over as he was already dead when the book started. That makes it even harder to feel any type of connection. The few flashbacks there are too short and too violent (bloody training) to make that relationship appealing. Yuck! I also had a problem with the plot as a whole. For me, it brought nothing new to the table. We get to see werewolves and demons and learn about other creatures but there is nothing distinctive in this lore. The werewolves are your traditional lycanthropes. Same goes for the demons. I think she could have gotten somewhere with the demons. She had a good start with Perry, too bad she chose to depict him (it really) as a villainous character with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Their relationship could have been so much more! I liked the masochistic angle. I just hope she is going somewhere with this and did not include it for shock value only. On the bright side, I also liked the inclusion of Native American characters in the book. It’s a rare thing. However, I also have a problem with this character and precisely their relationship with Kismet. It just felt too easy. The same way, I was not convinced by them sort of falling in love within the first 100 pages of the novel. They started off calling each other names and then ogling each other all the time. I feel like the fact that her lover is a lycanthrope is used to explain away their attraction. It’s ridiculous and contrived. Better to have them start off like normal people without prejudices and gradually falling in love by TALKING to each other. Throw in a couple of dates into the mix. A good urban fantasy heroine does not have to be alone all the time. She does not have to have a tragic past! And ABOVE ALL, she does not have to be nothing short of indestructible ! The only reason why this book does not get 2 stars is because Perry is a masochist, sort of ! less

The first time I read this book, I had a hard time getting into it. it was like being dropped into a alternative world and not knowing what was going on. Then, I wanted to read the rest of the series so I needed to reread it for a refresher. the second time around, I was able to understand what was going on. I found the main character witty and sarcastic. However, I think she is a bit naive and clueless, especially when it comes to Saul. All and all, I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next.
