review 1: I recently discovered Gillard, and I've enjoyed what I've read so far. This is the kind of book you bring on vacation or read over a rainy weekend. It's a simple but engaging mystery romance with a bit of a gothic feel. Yes, her characters tend to have long monologues with relative strangers in which they describe in great detail and with much self-reflection their personal histories, but sometimes you just don't want to tease the important bits out of an 800 page novel. Her romances are fairly methodical (the romantic interest is always the most emotionally wounded male character with exemplary listening skills and personal insight), but sometimes it's comforting to know exactly who the character will end up with. If you're looking for a good story with a hint of dar... morekness, eclectic and likable characters, and a happy ending, this is worth reading - just don't expect to be completely blown away.
review 2: Still digesting this one. Overall I did like it. The characters are likable and believable. Some of the sarcasm shared between Alfie and Gwen in the early pages were brilliantly British. There was no gothic quality though, except an old mansion and mysterious family secrets. The heroine is never in any danger, the secrets are revealed in tender, apologetic dialog. Loose ends are tied up neatly. A good read. less
