review 1: 4 1/2 stars“Hallowed Circle” by Linda Robertson is the second novel in the entertaining paranormal Persephone Alcmedi series which centers around a solitary witch who normally operates outside of a coven. She is maneuvered into competing for the highest position of her local coven which is named the Venefica (Sorceress) Coven but fears that her recently acquired status as the Lustrata and her ties to a powerful vampire-wizard will have extremely negative repercussions. Her complicated life which includes guardianship of a young waerwolf and a Nana who was evicted from her nursing home but still is a practicing witch, not to mention a personable waerwolf named Johnny who is also a rock star make it even more difficult for her to concentrate on her tests. Then the mu... morerders of the contestants start. This exciting paranormal story conveys several complex power struggles even as it plays with stereotypes about the various types of other-worldly beings. The imaginative competition with Persephone’s sometimes unexpected reactions to her tests gives a nice portrait of the hierarchy of the ruling council as well as insight into Persephone’s character. The silver-tongued suggestive comments constantly supplied by the sexy waere in her life as well as the lasting repercussions of the events that took place in “Vicious Circle” provide intriguing subplots that tie the series together yet there is enough background supplied that the reader is not completely lost. The description of the traditional rituals to celebrate Halloween and the occurrence of a blue moon provide depth and richness to the story and I was greatly entertained by the results of Persephone’s inclusion into a very elite society as she added to the stereotype of witches. A great addition to the series, appreciation will undoubtedly be enhanced by reading the previous book but it is not absolutely required in order to appreciate this very entertaining tale. I look forward to reading the subsequent novels in the series.A copy was provided to me in return for an honest review
review 2: 3 1/2 stars.Hallowed Circle, the second book in the Persephone Alcmedi series takes place approximately three weeks after Vicious Circle. Seph is trying to balance her life and time between her Wærewolf column, taking care of Nana and her foster daughter Beverly, figuring out her feelings for Wærewolf Johnny, and coming to term with her Lustrata destiny. To add to her ever burdening shoulders, Seph finds out that she was nominated to be a candidate to be high priestess, with Vivan Diamond ‘’missing’’ supposedly running off because she couldn’t handle being Beverly’s guardian. This was another solid addition to the Persephone Alcmedi series; I really enjoyed the world and characters that Mrs. Robertson created. With only three weeks separating the events between books, readers can see the characters grow and accept the roles they were given (certain facts about the Lustrata are revealed and the roles that people play regarding the Lustrata). In the first book Robertson introduced us to witches, Wærewolves, and vampires, and in the second installment readers get to meet some vengeful and scary fairies out to harm Menessos and Seph. The beginning of the book was a bit slow, as Seph goes through the regular motion of her everyday life, the story didn’t get interesting till the high priestess competition. There was a small twist regarding the task given to the candidates and the one murdering the competitors….totally didn’t see that coming and was a fun scene in all the seriousness that was the Eximium. While not a lot happened, the ending builds a bridge for the coming events in book 3, Fatal Circle. I look forward to seeing how Seph and the other witches handle the upcoming battle between the fairies. less
