review 1: Sarah is a high powered VP of human resources for a large Boston Consulting firm. Her husband is also a high powered executive at an Internet company. They have a good marriage, three young kids, a large house in a wealthy suburb, and a vacation home in Vermont. Sarah burns at both ends, but thrives on her high-wire life. Then one day while distracted by her phone, she crashes her car, and suffers a traumatic brain injury that leaves her with "left neglect," a real condition in which injury to the brain leaves the sufferer literally unaware of thing on the left. Sarah simply doesn't see, or notice, that she doesn't see anything on the left, and is unable to command her left arm, hand, leg, etc. A brutal recovery follows, and Sarah has to re-learn how to read, walk, e... moreverything. Everything is a challenge. As mush as I loved Still Alice, I never warmed to this book. It felt like Genova was punishing her main character for being high powered and competent, and the book felt somewhat hectoring. It was interesting to read about left neglect though.
review 2: I read this book after having enjoyed "Still Alice". What an incredible read. I had never heard of the the term "Left Neglect" and hope never to suffer from it myself or know anybody who does. There are so many medical conditions out there that sufferers and health professionals alike have to deal with. I have the greatest admiration for those who assist in the recovery and find ways that work with each person as, yes, we are all unique. I found myself covering the left half of a page at one stage just to see what the page would read like. As an avid reader, I have always thought losing my sight would be devastating but to still be able to see and read only what was on the right side - wow! Now I want to know more about this condition. less
