review 1: The series finale. Nothing too special, yet mildly gripping. Too much sex, but this is an erotic thriller, so what did I expect? Sophie is a "paranormal healer" and a dedicated virologist living in San Francisco. When her boss, Dr. Lee, creates a deadly virus and it goes viral, she steals the vaccine. Soon Jon, an undercover Ghost Op, sneaks into her San Francisco condo to rescue her (and the vaccine) from hoards of infected humans — inhuman monsters. Together, they must rush the vaccine to a place dubbed Haven, up on Blue Mountain, in Northern California.Jon and Sophie fall into lusty love immediately. It was actually funny. Monsters pound at the door while he falls into her arms, soon pounding into her. (According to Rice, he was hard, harder, hardest, and getting lo... moreng, longer, longer with every breath.)So the series concluded with this almost comedic zombie thriller. Apocalypse California. Only 4% survive the carnage wrought by the monster-making virus. As if the virus weren't enough fodder for a solid story, several obvious plot contrivances created added tension..Writing style: Rice is a fair writer, using some uncommon words, peppering the narrative with descriptive details and catching my attention with interesting factoids. She describes some vivid action scenes, creating an adrenaline flow. However, she repeats herself too much. It felt like filler. She described the backstory of the Ghost Ops and the creation of the Haven more than once. More than once she described how Stella (former actress and current chef) has a slashed face. Numerous redundant descriptions of the infected humans behaving like maddened zombies. Too much thinking (but not nearly as much as occurs in her previous books). On the positive side, I liked Jon and Sophie. Glad that Rice refrained from repeatedly describing how beautiful Sophie is. Plus, we see plenty of loving moments between couples from prequels: Catherine and Mac, Ellie and Nick, Ward and Stella. Also, the author captured the San Francisco setting nicely: Beach Street, Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Wharf, Buena Vista Cafe, etc. Some vivid scenes escaping the "swarm" of infected psychos on the streets of San Francisco.Epilogue occurs five years later. Married with kiddos in the new Republic. Charming.
review 2: Posted on Les Romantiques - Le forum du siteReviewed by FabiolaReview Copy from the PublisherBreaking danger is the third and last volume in the Ghost ops trilogy by Lisa Marie Rice. The first two volumes are titled Heart of Danger and I dream of danger.I’ve been waiting for the release of Breaking danger for one year because I dream of danger came to a roaring end. This trilogy had three steps: presentation of the setting and the characters in the first volume, emotion and the sequel of the plot in the second one and pure action in the last one.My feeling is very simple: it’s fortunate that readers know there will be a HEA, otherwise, I think that, personally, I wouldn’t have stood the suspense. In this novel, there is no villain who wants to eliminate the ex Ghost ops members, nor any who wants to make some experiences on humans. In Breaking danger, the only goal is to save human lives. And Haven, the little community created by our three heroes, will have an important part in it. I loved the main characters. Sophie Daniels is one of Lisa’s typical heroines: beautiful, nice, respectful, and compliant when her own safety is at stake. Just like the heroines of the two first volumes, Sophie has a psychic ability, but I’ll let you discover it when you read the book.Jon Ryan has a very dark past, more so than other of Lisa’s heroes. But his character and personality are typical: strong, big, protective and possessive. The sex scenes are numerous and well described, as usual. The story oscillates between humor, emotion, action and sex scenes, and they are well balanced. I loved the scenes between the men and their leader. I didn’t feel anything was lacking and, when I finished the book, I believed in the outcome, both of the love story and the suspense regarding the future of the US people. With the Ghost ops trilogy, Lisa Marice Rice leads readers where nobody was expecting, yet she rises to the challenge as well as in her previous romantic suspense novels. And if I had to describe the trilogy in one word, it would be: mind-blowing. Everything goes crescendo, nothing goes smoothly and the whole story rings true.To sum it up, you must read this trilogy. less
