Shanghai Girls
review 1: One giant leap up from its predecessor "Shanghai Girls", "Dreams of Joy" kept me captivated. She continues the saga starring the girls' daughter, Joy. Lisa See apparently did a phenomenal amount of research on China's Great Leap Forward and what you learn will open your eyes and even shock you at times. This book was especially interesting to me living in China as I can see some of that generation still and can imagine what has shaped their current habits.
review 2: This is the continuation of the story of Pearl and May with Pearl's daughter finding out some family secrets and decides to find her real father in China. Joy embraces communist China until reality sets in. Pearl goes to her homeland which has changed so much since she was a girl to find Joy.This
... moreis an interesting look at China in it's early days of communism as well as a mother's love for her daughter. less
