review 1: Having cared for her mother and youngest sister as they lost their battles with cancer, Claire is devastated when she discovers a lump and ends up with a double mastectomy. Jenna an old friend, arrives unannounced on Claire`s doorstep. Jenna is running away from her husband`s request for a divorce. Together they hop in Jenna`s old Chevy to make a cross country trip back home to Pine Lake, stopping to visit mutual friends, as they go. Jenna`s random act of kindness to grant Claire`s wish to return home ends blessing all the women along the way. You will laugh and cry as you journey with the women. This poignant women`s contemporary fiction calls out to women everywhere `to stay close to people you love no matter how much it hurts.
review 2: I felt I should have
... moreliked this book more than I did. There were lots of good things in it but I did not really connect with any of the characters. I also found it a tad depressing to read about three women all going through such difficult challenges in their lives even though there was hopefulness at the end. Perhaps my biggest problem was the sudden close reconnections with the high school friends. It didn't seem like they'd kept in contact with each other through the years or were good enough friends in high school to go traveling across country with each baring their souls as they did. Claire is an ex-Buddhist nun with breast cancer-the third in her family, Jenna is experiences upheavals with her job and family, and Nicole is dealing with her oldest son receiving treatment for mental issues. On what first seems to be a whim, Jenna decides to drop out of her life by visiting Claire in Oregon. Claire in turn decides they need to take a cross a country trip so she can complete the white water rafting trip she abandoned in high school in the Adirondacks. Along their circuitous route, they reconnect with old friends. There were lots of life lessons about parenting, dealing with cancer, and finding peace with oneself. It should have been more uplifting for me than it was. less

Good book! For me, it was a bit humdrum in the beginning but then I started enjoying it intensely!

This was a well written book, but the story was predictable and not very engaging.
