review 1: Oliver Ryan is a successful children’s book writer who is married to an equally successful woman, Alice who also happens to be the illustrator for his books. From outside they are the vision of a happy couple but reality is far from it. One day, Oliver hit Alice so badly that she ended up in coma and nobody could understand that why would he do that. First I want to make it very clear that I am the most sensitive person when it comes to domestic violence and when I read the first few pages, my blood literally boiled but I kept on reading because like everyone else even I wanted to know that why he would hit his wife and when the story started unravelling, layer after layer, I just couldn’t bring myself to keep this down even for a nano-second. There were few particular... more incidents in there when I literally hauled. Though Oliver came across a very nasty form of human being but it just completely breaks my heart to know that how lonely he had been his entire life. This is one of the shockingly stunning books I have ever read. Liz’s writing is so beautiful that for a moment I thought it was all happening in front of my eyes. A great book in every sense!
review 2: One of my favourite reads of the year, what a great debut! It's actually difficult to believe it's a debut and I cannot wait to see what Liz Nugent writes next! What a talented author. This was totally gripping and page-turning from page one right until the end. I could NOT put it down. Oh Oliver...what a character you are.....I loved the story being told from the various character perspectives, it worked so well for this story. I wanted to cry at some of the story relayed by the characters of Eugene and Barney. This will make a really interesting book club read with huge scope for discussion. Overall, a very impressive, skilled and clever psychological thriller. less
