review 1: I picked this book up because I wanted something with a bit more depth than the last few books I had read, which were new adult romance. I was invested in the story quickly, but about 1/3 of the way through I started to feel like I was having to work to hard to stay interested. There are too many story lines. I wanted more about Nicole's family, and really couldn't have cared less about Sol's family, his daughter's adoption story, wife's religious renaissance, etc. If these things had meaningfully contributed to Sol's story and his involvement with Nicole's story I might feel differently, but they didn't. Lastly, I didn't feel like any if the characters grew over the course of the story, except perhaps Mimi. Given the story line, I would expect a lot of character developme... morent, but I didn't get the feeling that anyone would have made different choices at the end than they did at the beginning.
review 2: One of several ebooks I downloaded on my Kindle for a ten-day vacation. I read this in between "On Cold Mountain" and "Flight Behavior" which were highly enjoyable. This book---not so much. There were a few powerful spots when the author got inside her main character. One section where I did cry (good sign). Two main problems for me: 1) there were loads of descriptions and stories for a wide diversity of characters, many of whom had little to do with the main story. At best, these side stories filled the pages. At worse, they were diversions off the main plot that continually stopped the forward motion of the story. The judge was the most three-dimensional character. Something was just missing from the others that left me on the outside looking in at a "television-style diverse cast of characters"; 2) the medical issues and the highly improbable sequence were just too implausible. Give me a break. I don't want to spoil it for others so I won't get into details. Others may love this book. I was disappointed. less
