review 1: 3 stars. I loved the vivid imagery of life in Singapore in the 20s. The story telling was wonderful and there were enough twists to keep it interesting. I'm grateful for my kindle, as there were also many things to look up and define, which is fine by me. I was a little disappointed by the ending though. It seemed a little rushed, and there wasn't much in the way of closure. I want to know how everyone's lives continued. How long do they stay at the palace? Does Aggie stay at the newspaper? The jewelry store? What about the man she meets at the end? It was done with enough finality to allude that there is no sequel, so I guess I'm just left wondering.

... moreisn't really a young adult novel. I really didn't learn much about Singaporean history although the palace was all about history. Agnes' emotions didn't seem to run very deep, I think she asked herself if she was shallow, I think she might have been, at least her character development was in this novel. less
