review 1: This novel is funny and sad and heartwarming. I especially appreciated the periodic heartbreak-type diets throughout the book. My husband left me just over 3 years ago, and the author absolutely nailed it in the way she describe how Eve felt when Chuck left and how difficult it was for her to cope at times. I love Eve's son, Marcus,because he has a sardonic sense of humor. I saw my own son in Marcus so often throughout the novel, and I would have to put the book down and just laugh out loud at some of his antics. The one section of a chapter where Marcus is described as laughing maniacally hit me has hysterically funny. Definitely a book to purchase!
review 2: Here is what drew me in: A husband just walks out on his family without saying a word during a GARAGE... more SALE. You heard me, LOL A garage sale! I thought "How quirky is this gonna be" as I rubbed my little readers hands together maniacally. Well, that is where the quirky ended.Everything in the book seemed so disjointed. I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but it just didn't work for me. I liked the relationship that Marcus (age 17) has with his half sister (age 9). At first I liked the subcharacters. But then they became more and more main characters and they weren't as fleshed out as they needed to be. Plot lines were never tied up for me. Sometimes that doesn't bother me, I can be left to wonder if the rest of the story is tight. But nothing here was tied up at all. Chuck is still gone. The office politics issue is still going on. The rest of the tied up parts are with subcharacters. It is a sweet story about a family. If you like that and don't get caught up in details, then go for it. You will probably like it. less
