review 1: I liked the fact that this book started off exactly where the first book ended so that there was no way to misinterpret what was going on. The characters stayed true to who they were from the start except for one who was intended to change as things progressed. The story flows naturally and makes sense as we are dealing with immortals. The language is right for them as they are ancient but have adapted to the modern world.Past Death made a deal with the Dark One, he would bring her back from the dead-dead and she would supply him with a mate. The mate she gives him however is the human clone she created who Gabriel has fallen in love with. Before she can leave hell and go to Gabriel and try to convince him she is that human he loves Deidre makes a bet with her. She bets pa... morest death that she cannot get Gabriel to love her in a week, if he wins Gabriel is hers, but if she loses she returns to hell as the mate of Darkyn.Past Death was a goddess and never had real feelings, though she says she loves/loved Gabriel for thousands of years. Darkyn does not like to lose and strips her of her powers so now she must make him love her without tricks. Not an easy thing for an arrogant ex-goddess who consigned an innocent to hell in order to get what she wants.Nice story, nice characters, nice read. I think anyone would enjoy this.
review 2: I'm reading this along with the book club. This is the read for the week. And I'm utterly at lost as to what I WANT to happen. There are love triangles and then there are LOVE squares with twists and ties and strings all around. These characters of Ms. Ford's are leaping off the page and shaking their fists at me. I want to strangle them, hug them, soothe them, smack them, scream at them, commiserate with them, smack them again, and then...I have no idea how I want this to end. The title has nothing to do with what I thought was going to happen and I could've smacked myself for being dumb and not seeing the double entendre or expecting it. Duh duh duh. Crap, what do I want to happen in Darkyn's Mate? I DO NOT KNOW. All I know is, that's next week's read and I'm trying to be good and not read ahead until after discussion tomorrow anyway. :) I want Harmony to get hers. That is for sure. I cannot stand betrayals and traitors. Darkyn has so much depth that I do not want him to get screwed over. I can't stand past-Death's cavalier attitude towards humans and those she stomps on in her path, but she's now learning what it means to be human and regretting what she can remember so she's developing. Gabriel, poor poor Gabe. He's all kinds of confused. And Deidre...and Darkyn...and Gabe...and other Deidre...and GAH! less
