review 1: I enjoyed more than I expected. It was an interesting twist on typical fantasy with the elementals and their hive society, but it also reminded me a lot of Anne Bishop's Black Jewels, without being so... shall we say "Black" (dark). If you enjoyed those books, but were maybe a bit put off by some of it, maybe this would be a bit more your thing. Bottom line, the world, story and characters were interesting enough and the writing wasn't bad. It's a good weekend read.
review 2: I just ate this book up! It's one of the best fantasy novels I have read in years. I enjoyed it so much I can't wait to read the rest in the series. It's filled with courage, adventure, and a sense of belonging. Seriously, this book should be read and put on many people's reading lists
... more. The companionship between Heyou and Solie, and the relationship between everyone in the book whether it is for good or evil is full of feeling. The Community is a place of belonging and freedom and I wish I lived in such a place. less

This was typical PNR, but enjoyable. If you like Marjorie Liu, for instance, you will like this.

Expected a powerful, angry sylph. Got a customizable teenage boy. Disappointed.
