Detective Jackson Mystery
review 1: If you were a fan of the television show Law and Order, I think you will like the Detective Jackson series by L.J. Sellers. There is absolutely nothing cute or warm here - no heroics or trumped-up drama - just a normal cop with problems trying to make his life work while investigating homicides in Eugene, Oregon. Everything that happens to these people - both the cops and other characters - feels very real. There are no super-villains or terrorists or zombies. Instead, small problems or flaws in character snowball into tragic or terrible incidents. I find that sometimes after reading the fantasy world I dwell in for most of my reading experiences, it's sometimes good to come back to the mixed-up problems of our everyday existence in the 21st century. Not for too long, thou... moregh - no one is happy in these stories, and it can be a little depressing to listen to their f'd up lives.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. It didn't hurt that it is set in my hometown either. However, it is not for the faint of heart, as it is pretty graphic. I guess that is too be expected from a crime novel. The characters were well-developed and I felt sympathy/empathy for their problems. L.J. Sellers's books are a quick read and I already picked up the next Detective Jackson book. It is the last in the series for now, so I hope she keeps them coming! Thanks Mom for the suggestion to read these. less
