review 1: If your whole existence was killing werewolves and you suddenly became one but no one would kill you to put you out of your misery what would you do? If your whole mission in life was to torture and then kill the woman that had killed your wife but you find instead that desire overrules that mission, what would you do? If a killer was out there, stalking both of you...would you allow the things that divide you to separate you even more or would you bond together and fight for survival? This book answers all those questions. The story line itself was pretty good. I wasn't really sure I believed the whole "magic" that the hero Julian possessed. That part would have probably been more believable if the people he made wolves exhibited similar traits, even if not to the same le... morevel as he had them. Otherwise it was a fast read and I really enjoyed it.
review 2: i really really enjoyed this book!! I really loved that this story showed the world of werewolves, rather than the world of the hunters as the rest of the Nightcreatures series mostly dwelled on. Alexandra is a werewolf hunter, who used to work for the Jager- Suchers, but decides to go "rogue" and hunt werewolves on her own without the help of this elite government regulated group. Years ago, her father was killed by a werewolf, and ever since she's wanted to see each and everyone of them good and dead. While hunting one day, she kills a werewolf in human form and in broad daylight. Enter Julian Barlow, an ancient Berzerker warrior who has been looking for the Hunter who killed his wife for a very long time. He has followed a lead, and sees Alex murder the werewolf in cold blood. Julian must act at once, and kidnaps Alex and turns her into a werewolf to show her that they are not all bad, and to punish her for the death of his beloved wife. Meanwhile Edward Mandenauer, leader of the Jagger-Suchers has been looking for Julian Barlow for a very long time. He thinks Julian is building a werewolf army, but cannot for the life of him, find where their camp is. He seems to have eyes everywhere, and has located Alexandra, and watched everything unravel. Now he wants her, in werewolf form to be a spy and go with Alex to his camp and report back to the Jagger-Succhers. He injects her with a potion, the government agency has been working on, to curb the blood thirst of new werewolves. Julian Barlow is indeed different. He is a decendant of the Berzerker warriors, and the one Berzerker that legends are based on, a Viking who turned into a wolf in battle. He has created an entire village in the middle of Alaska of werewolves, who like him, do not have a thirst for blood and murder. He saved them all from death, and turned them into werewolves. As Alexandra learns more and more about Barlows world, she realizes they are indeed different, and battles with her inner self whether or not she should report back to Mandenauer and the Jagger-Succhers or remain in Barlowsville with Julian and some new friends she's made along the way. This is a fast paced, action packed book with a good share of sexual tension. One thing I really did not understand, was a werewolf Alexandra met in the EAT cafe in Barlowsville. His name was Daniel, and he claimed to have known Edward Mandenauer, and had been rather close maybe even friends with him once upon a time. However, Daniel has been a werewolf since the 1700's and Edward Mandenauer is a mortal being who was not around during that time period. I highly doubt Handeland is going will develope this story further in future books, as it was such a small part of the overall novel. less
