review 1: Handeland never fails to find new and interesting ways to keep her series fresh. In this installment of her Night Creatures series, she takes a look at the Loch Ness Monster. Yes, it's a bit of a jump from the werewolves or some form of wolf monster she usually depicts, but this doesn't come as a surprise since Edward and his hunters have been implying that there are more than just one kind of monster out there.I like the lead lady, Kristen quite a bit in this book. She was adventurous, plucky and tenacious. She also had intelligence and even remorse at times. I liked the legends and the mythos Handeland explored with the book and I liked that it kept me guessing. My only gripe about this book is the God awful written accents! I get that the story takes place in Scotland. I... more am perfectly capable of imagining a Scottish accent without all the horrible misspelled words and apostrophes. Reading it was jarring to my mind and often came across as Irish, which made the dialogue very frustrating to read at times. The story itself is near perfect, and would have been if not for the accent dialogue.
review 2: You know there just aren't enough books that deal with the Loch Ness Monster. For some reason this mythical creature is interesting to me. So when I this character heads to Scotland to debunk this mystery I was happy. The town where most of the action lives was charming and filled with eccentric characters. As the story goes on you realize just why these people are so eccentric, but it just makes you love them more.Kris was a fun person, her past makes it really hard for her to trust people. So it was interesting when she came to the small town and every one was in her business right away. I loved how she met Liam. The odd ball encounter just made for a great mystery. Liam was fun too. You knew something was off with him, but not quite sure what it was. Soon you realized what was going on and things started to make sense.I thought it was very easy to pick out the bad guy. I also was able to figure out what the ending would be. In the end it didn't matter as I really liked all the characters and wanted to see what they would do in each situation. less
