review 1: This was a so so mystery. I had not read this author before but picked it up on grounds of the sticker on front telling me that her first novel was an Edgar Award winner. Set in Detroit in the fifties, I found the shifting point of view confusing and, by the end, was still not clear as to the motives of the vast array of protagonists. Yes their stories were all interwoven to keep one from guessing whodunnit until the very last page but they just served to truly muddle my. It didnʻt help that many of the female characters were in nevous brekdown mode. Was this a good depiction of the mores of the time? heck I hope not. Reading this genre novel wherein racism and fear of encroachment of "the other" into oneʻs neighbourhood, was a driving feature for the plot, it seemed p... moreretty strange timing as the "real world" background was media frenzy about Ferguson.
review 2: Roy is on of those "sleeper" authors: really great writers that should be more well-known and widely-read, but just haven't broken through yet. Perhaps it's because it's so hard to categorize her books. They are not mysteries, but they are also not basic "slice of life" narratives either. They are puzzles that the reader takes part in as much as the characters do. This one is just as unsettling as Bent Road (her debut), although the source of the unease is not as otherworldly or mysterious as it was in Bent Road. Here, she has more of a point to make around the issues of gender, race, and white flight. If you're new to Roy, I'd recommend reading Bent Road first, as it's deliciously creepy at points, but this is a wonderful follow up. less
