review 1: Meh. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it, either. I skipped a lot at the end to get through it. Saw the uncle kidnapping her coming as soon as they got married and left London. There just wasn't any fun or lightness to this book AT ALL. I've read lots of Beauty and the Beast theme romances and some are better than others and this one wasn't. I'll read Tristan's story (I already bought it) but I have other stuff to read first.
review 2: This is possibly the most ahistorical romance novel I've ever read. Even though set in Victorian times, the heroine gets sent to a Convent (in England! Which takes a Protestant young woman!) for a decade, and the hero and his brothers get sent to a tower by their evil uncle. This would work if the book was set in the 1200s, but
... more it's not. If you can overlook this little bit of WTF, it's actually a decent read, about a hero who returns to claim his birthright from his murdering uncle - hero is scarred (literally) and tough but a good guy, and heroine is his childhood friend and the one who rescued him from death. The book is surprisingly low angst and the OTP is shockingly low-maintenance. I liked that. less
