review 1: This is the first book of this series that I have read. Maybe I missed something by not reading the other books first because I don't know if I will read the others.Frannie Darling is approached by one of her best friends wife's brother (Sterling Mabry, the eighth Duke of Greystone) to become is mistress. He is obsessed by first sight. The story follows these two as he tries to persuade her. Mean while she is a part owned in a gaming club and does the books for them. In her spare time she is attempting to open an orphanage for boys to get them off the streets where she once grew up. In her attempts to find boys she takes boys from thieves who use the boys to steal. This causes one of the larges "owners" of the boys to get very upset. In addition to these two issues Fannie d... moreiscovers things about her past that she may not wish to know, Finds things she wasn't looking for, and the reader gets answers to questions that she is denied.
review 2: In the past two novels in the series, there's been one central figure who brings together all the men in Feagan's band of child thieves - Frannie Darling. The mother hen, the provider, and supporter even at a very young age, she's been there for all four men. And all four men have at one time or another believed themselves in love with her and have said time and time again they will do anything for her, kill, steal, or go to the gallows for her. And indeed they have (or nearly in case of going to the gallows). In the first book, Luke, Earl of Claybourne, killed Frannie's attacker and thought he would marry her. He asked someone who he ended up marrying to change her deportment and make her feel comfortable in the realm of the aristocracy. Frannie believed she would marry him out of obligation, but wanted better for Luke since he's done so much for her. She's always felt uncomfortable around the aristocracy. Little by little she's felt secure around men and realized that what happens between and man and a woman can be done because of love. She hasn't lain with a man of her own choosing, but knows there can be wondrous and pleasing feelings and sensations. So the most ironic part of who Frannie will end up with is that he's Sterling, Duke of Greystone. For the woman who is afraid of being in aristocratic circles, she's going to end up with a freaking duke! When she first sees him at Luke's wedding, she's instantly attracted, she feels the fluttering sensations, the power he holds over men and women, but something vulnerable.Sterling has been away for a good time traveling the world. He's secret is that his eyesight is failing him and he wants to see the world before it's completely gone. His father insisted that he take a wife and prepare himself for the dukedom, but he's insistent that no woman would faithfully have him. He wants Frannie to be his mistress as a sort of last hooray, and he offers her the position. Frannie knows no good could come out of it, Jack and the lads know no good could come of it. And like big brothers they threaten him to back off and not play with her affections. But of course when one is told no, one only wants more. They like to constantly stab their hearts by repeatedly telling each other and themselves why they could never be long time lovers or married. But they are willing to give themselves over for just one night. But just one night turns into another night and so on. But it's really the events that sort of dictate their actions and feelings. Sykes is a baddie from the rookeries. He's known for taking young boys, treating them horribly for his pockets. When she goes to the rookeries, she's often taking in his boys and of course he ain't cool with that. With a threat over her Sterling knows he must protect her, keep his heart out of the matter, and maintain his secret.Like I've mentioned in my reviews for the previous books in the series, this one too has a dark overtone. Frannie has led a hard life and while Sterling has lead a pretty cushy life, he harbors a dark secret that will one day overpower him. There's a certain frenetic energy when they are around each other. Sterling comments to himself that in Frannie he sees a innocent, yet seductive, caring women. In Sterling, Frannie sees a charming man who she comes to realize is extremely caring of others before his own needs. So far out of the three I've read (I'll be reading #4 and the 4.5 soon) this one most resonated with me. Then I'll say Dodger's story, then Claybourne's. But all three heroes have been really strong as are the heroines and are all different personalities. Usually there's a weak book, but so far so good! less

This was my favorite book of the Scoundrels of St. James series. Frannie was an interesting character, and it was great to see how the incidents in her life has made her the strong woman she turned out to be. Also, the affection from Feagan's lads is cute the way they treat her like a sister. Well, except for Swindler, but that's the next book.Sterling was also interesting because he was tortured in a completely different way than growing up in the rookeries. His secret is kept with him until the very end, and it is endearing how their lives turn out.

My favorite in the series by far. I actually loved both the characters. I could not put this one down. I loved finally learning the Frannie got her happy ending. My only regret is that the author pretty much ruins the next book for us by giving us a glimpse into Jim's story. Not cool! I hate when the authors do that. It's like really I want to read what happens not be told about it in the book before it!!

Nice story. Love how they match with each other. But still my favorite is Luke and Cat.
