review 1: I echo the review odd Meredith below! This variation shows what may have occurred if Elizabeth joined Jane in London following Bingleys and Darcy's departure from Netherfield. In this variation arms Gardiner is a widow but her husbands connections made her close friends with Lord Matlock (Darcy's uncle and Coronel Fitzwilliams father). This close friendship will put the Bennet sisters in Darcy's company and we can all imagine what that will mean for Elizabeth and jane. I loved the character of Lord Matlock! Elizabeth quickly becomes one of his favorites and his teasing of Darcy and Bingley was hilarious! I loved the path of love for Elizabeth and Darcy (not without pain either) and the reconciliation of Jane to Bingley. I loved all the family members of the Matlocks and I... more loved getting to know Mrs Gardiner better as well. The author creates an understandable explanation for Wickhams connection to the family and of course he causes trouble for our characters but i enjoyed Lord Matlock taking charge here. I also loved the relationship that developed between Mr Bennet and Darcy. The only reason for my 4 vs 5 star rating is that I don't like going to Bed with my characters on their wedding night! Hence my warning!
review 2: This is the 3rd of Lilian's P&P variations that I have read and enjoyed. In this case, the story takes place after the ball at Netherfield. Mr. Gardiner unexpectedly passed away two years prior and Jane and Lizzy go to London with their Aunt and her children to spend the Christmas season. Mrs. Gardiner is still grieving the loss of her husband and Jane is broken-hearted over the departure of Bingley. Lizzy finds herself conflicted over her feelings for Darcy and shocked to find out that his Uncle Lord Matlock and cousin Lady Selena are old friends of her aunt and uncle, pushing the two into spending time together. The usual angst-ridden path to a HEA for Darcy & Elizabeth follow. A good twist on the story with a deeper exploration of some of the characters of P&P and an introduction to some new faces. less
