review 1: This book is labeled a thriller but it's more like a police procedural exercise or intrigue - no real thrills. It's definitely not a mystery since you are told the perpetrators early in the tale. That being said, I enjoyed the plot and characters (thankfully the lead character was not too flawed like in most other police procedurals). The plot gets a bit contrived and derailed at the end but within reason. The insight into Danish law regarding pedophiles and the moral struggle of some of the detectives were also thought-provoking. The biggest con for me was the very clunky (and sometimes just outright inaccurate) translation that kept me re-reading paragraphs to get the meaning. I have seen this comment in other reviews of Scandinavian "noir" but now I fully understand the... moreir peeve. I will certainly read the second book of this brother- sister team and hope they get a better translator.
review 2: I read quite a few negative reviews about the book but can't really support a lot of them. I thought Superintendent Simonsen is likable, so his his team with all their different personalities. There were a lot of different characters involved and it could get confusing every so often but I liked how Lotte and Soren Hammer showed pedophilia in all its ugliness touching both sides of the law and justice, not an easy subject. However I found the ending a bit confusing.... less

This book was well written. I liked the characters. However I did feel that it did drag in spots.
