review 1: I have mixed feelings about this book because it is not what the book is supposed to be about based on the blurb. It is supposed to be a book about a mother's revenge after she loses her daughter. It turned out to be about a grieving mother's emotions. That in itself is not a bad thing as it was well written but it does take away from what you expect after the blurb. Perhaps it's a good way of surprising the reader but it does not really deliver revenge like I as a reader would expect
review 2: My second Louise Doughty book, and I'm still on the fence about her as a writer. Some of the writing, is lovely, evocative, and painful.... but then as in Apple Tree Yard, her central female character just acts in such an inconceivable manner it's hard to have faith in ... morethe storyline. There's a lot that's good about the book and it has an intriguing plotline about a mother seeking revenge on the man who kills her daughter in a hit and run accident, but it seems to run out of steam towards the end. less
